Total Victory Over Satan

“But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus.”

1 Corinthians 15:57

“Having wiped out the handwriting of requirements that was against us, which was contrary to us. And He has taken it out of the way, having nailed it to the cross. Having disarmed principalities and powers, He made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them in it.”  Colossians 2:14-15

In his first letter to the Corinthian believers, Paul taught that each believer’s life should be one marked with thankfulness and gratitude. However, Paul went a step further and instructed the church exactly what they should be thankful for – our victory in Jesus Christ.

What victory is that? Simply put, when Jesus went to the cross for our sins and rose again from the dead, He finally defeated the very things that keep us enslaved – sin, satan, self, and death.

Every temptation, anxiety, fear, and doubt that plagues our lives each day can be traced back to one thing – our fallen nature and sin. Yet in Christ Jesus, we are released from that sin and death forever, and we are free to live the lives that God created us to live!

When we see that every battle has been won by the blood of Jesus, we truly have something to be thankful for. How will you show that thankfulness and gratitude to God today? How will you live your life knowing that truth today?

Colossians 2:14–15 describes what God did for those who trust his Son, when he died on the cross: “[The record of debt that stood against us] he set aside, nailing it to the cross. He disarmed the rulers and authorities and put them to open shame, by triumphing over them in him.”

When Christ died for our sins, Satan was disarmed and defeated. The one eternally destructive weapon that he had was stripped from his hand, namely, his accusation before God that we are guilty and should perish with him. When Christ died that accusation was nullified. All those who entrust themselves to Christ will never perish. Satan cannot separate them from the love of God in Christ (Romans 8:37–39).

Jesus tells us in the Gospel of Luke that he has overcome "the strong man," Satan, attacking and defeating humanity's ancient enemy. We are equipped to share in this victory provided we are careful "not to let the old enemy deceive us again. Hallelujah, match on victoriously in the victory secured for us on the cross.
