“Even so we, when we were
children, were in bondage under the elements of the world. But when the fullness of the time had come,
God sent forth His Son, born of a woman, born under the law, to redeem those
who were under the law, that we might receive the adoption as sons. And because
you are sons, God has sent forth the Spirit of His Son into your hearts, crying
out “Abba, Father!” Therefore you are no longer a slave but a son, and if a
son, then an heir of God through Christ.” Galatians 4:3-7
In the Old Testament,
redemption, as previously stated, is always a price concept. One could recover
a field lost to creditors, maybe by a bankrupt brother. It could be redeemed
and bought for him (Leviticus 25:23-25).
Likewise, Jesus Christ saved
us from our sins, buying us back by paying a very high ransom price. Satan the
devil (the arch-adversary of God and humanity) kidnapped us all spiritually,
but Christ's blood which is more than covers the full ransom price.
As everyone, Jesus entered
the world born of a mother. He did not play around the law; He was born under
the rule to redeem everyone under it. Satan tried his best to tempt Jesus, and
where we failed to obey God, Jesus succeeded to the very end. This is the
gospel — Jesus entered our world, lived the perfect life for all us, and gave
up His life as a ransom for us all. God
sends the Spirit of His Son into our heart for one reason: because He adopted
us into His family.
In His redemption work, Jesus
made us God's children. We have such access. "How do we use our access?
God sends His Son's Spirit into our hearts, giving us His voice. God gives us a
part of Himself so that when we need Him, we can call Jesus on His behalf and
He will never deny Himself.
Learning in the depths of our being that God is our Father is not the product of our goodness but the reflection of Jesus to convince us that despite all our fears and doubts, God is still our Father.
