“For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Walk as children of light (for the fruit of the Spirit is in all goodness, righteousness, and truth), finding out what is acceptable to the Lord. And have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather expose them. For it is shameful even to speak of those things which are done by them in secret. But all things that are exposed are made manifest by the light, for whatever makes manifest is light. Therefore He says: “Awake, you who sleep, arise from the dead and Christ will give you light.” Ephesians 5:8-14
And God said, Let there be light; and there was light. And God saw the light, that it was good; and God divided the light from darkness (Gen. 1:3-4). Before we became Christian and before we knew the love of God in Christ Jesus we were in darkness. As we are unbelievers, we were living in darkness but actually we were darkness. Because were really living in sin, which means darkness.
We shared in the world's darkness, we were partners in darkness of the world. The meaning of the word for "darkness" in the Greek has the sense of bearer of darkness.' or Instrument of darkness'. This is a way of expressing the truth that before we came to know Christ then our whole being was corrupted by sin, Even the good that we did was tainted with evil and corruption. But now that we are in Christ we are the light in the Lord. Those who put their life in Christ are now light instead of darkness.
Light is one of the most
universal and fundamental symbols. It is
the spiritual and divine, it is illumination and intelligence, Light is source
of goodness and the ultimate reality. Jesus applies the little to himself while
debating with Jews and states: I am the
light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will
have the light of life (John 8:2).
