“How can someone be born when they are old?” Nicodemus asked. “Surely they cannot enter a second time into their mother’s womb to be born!” Jesus answered, “Very truly I tell you, no one can enter the kingdom of God unless they are born of water and the Spirit. Flesh gives birth to flesh, but the Spirit gives birth to spirit. You should not be surprised at my saying, ‘You must be born again.’ The wind blows wherever it pleases. You hear its sound, but you cannot tell where it comes from or where it is going. So, it is with everyone born of the Spirit.” John 3:4-8
Being born of the Spirit is
separate birth from the physical birth. The new birth is the work of the Holy
Spirit, who places the believer in the right relationship with God. It is the
work of God not of man. John 1:13 To be born of the Spirit is spiritual in
nature and it is something which the Spirit of God performs in our hearts, in
other words we don’t give birth to ourselves.
In John 3:5 Jesus said that
“we have to be born from water and the Spirit for this birth, and if we are not
born from water and the spirit we can not enter the kingdom of God.”
This new birth of the spirit
is necessary for our salvation because all of us have been separated from God
because of our sin.
