Understanding the Principles and Practice of Assessment Question and Answer 2

2.1 Compare the strengths and limitations of a range of assessment methods with reference to the needs of individual learners
Direct Observation:
Strengths

·         It's easy to see the learner carrying out his normal activities

·         Gives room for direct interaction with the learning and provides opportunity to give feedback face

·         to face

Limitations:
This method can make the learner nervous and be unable to perform to their best ability

The learner might be acting to please the assessor or do what the assessor wants to see and not necessarily how he works when the assessor is not around
Recognition of Prior Learning:

Strengths:
This helps to speed up the assessment process as prior training completed with approved certificate
can be used to cover some of the criteria from their current assessment

Limitation:
Prior leaning might be out of date
It may no longer be relevant

Examining of Products of Work
Strength
Opportunity to see first-hand what the learner has done to determine competence

Limitation
Products of work presented might not be the learner's personal work, could have been done by someone else or merely involved in just part of making it.
There could be issues on confidentiality in cases where learners have to provide letters or forms with other peoples' details.
