Understanding the Principles and Practice of Assessment Question and Answer 1

1.1 Explain the function of assessment in learning and development

Assessment is a process carried out to evaluate and determine the progress and achievements of a learner.
Initial Assessment is done at the start of the assessment process to determine the current level of the learner as well as strengths and weaknesses.

Formative assessment is done when the assessment is on-going to monitor the progress and learning of the learner.

Summative assessment is done at the end of the assessment period to determine whether the learner has achieved the qualification and completed the training successfully

1.2 Define the key concepts and principles of assessment

The following are the key concepts and principles of assessments;

·         Assessment cannot be judged anyhow - it has to be carried out according to standard and agreed on requirements and criteria.

·         Assessment has to be valid and reliable - When preparing for the assessment, valid methods of assessments have to be used. Reliability is important as if the same assignment is marked by different Assessors the same decision has to be reached for the assessment to be deemed as reliable.

·         Assessment has to be fair and transparent - The assessor should carry the learner along and be transparent on the method of assessment and why such method has been chosen.

·         Assessment in the vocational sector is carried out by examining the evidence provided by learners. Evidence needs to also be sufficient and meet the required criteria.

1.3 Explain the responsibilities of the assessor
An Assessor is someone whose responsibility is to determine whether a learner is competent based on the evidence gathered through assessment using the criteria provided by the awarding body. Other responsibilities include the followings:

·         Carry out an induction with learner to introduce the course

·         Plan assessment using valid methods of assessment

·         Provide learner with feedback throughout the assessment journey

·         Judge evidence and make assessment decision using criteria set by the awarding body

·         Communicate and agree assessment process with learners

·         Keep the record of assessment

·         Participate in standardisation activities

·         Take part in the continuous professional development

1.4 Identify the regulations and requirements relevant to assessment in own area of practice

The followings are some of the regulations relevant in my area of practice ICT;

·         Health & safety

·         Confidentiality

·         Data Protection

·         Equality Act
