Deuteronomy 1 to 15 recounts Moses' final address to Israel, reminding them of their journey and renewing their commitment to God as they prepare to enter the Promised Land. In the opening chapters, Moses reviews Israel’s history, including their rebellion and God’s steadfastness. This recounting serves as a powerful reminder of God’s faithfulness despite Israel’s failures, underscoring that their success depends on their obedience and trust in Him.

Moses urges Israel to wholeheartedly embrace God’s commands, emphasizing that obedience will bring blessings and longevity in the land. The Shema in Deuteronomy 6:4–5—“Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one. Love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul, and strength”—is central to their identity and relationship with God, calling them to exclusive devotion and love for Him.

The following chapters outline various laws concerning worship, justice, and social responsibility, highlighting that true devotion to God extends into every area of life. Laws regarding generosity to the poor, care for the vulnerable, and fair treatment of others reflect a community built on compassion and justice. Moses emphasizes that obedience is not just about rule-following but about living in a way that reflects God’s character.

Through these chapters, Moses calls Israel to remember their past, honour God in their present, and prepare for their future with Him. It’s a reminder that faithfulness to God is demonstrated in love, obedience, and caring for others.
