Understanding the Principles and Practice of Assessment Question and Answer |
8.1 Explain legal issues, policies and procedures relevant to
assessment, including those for confidentiality, health, safety and welfare
The followings are some legal
requirements:
·
Health & Safety - This legal requirement is
very important because it concerns both the Assessor and the learners and
everyone involved in the assessment process. As an Assessor, I should ensure at
all time that I do not put myself, the learner and others in danger. It is
necessary to comply with the health and safety policy on the ground when
visiting a learner for assessment. If PPE
is required, Assessor should ensure that everyone wears them appropriately.
·
Equality & Diversity - Assessor should
comply with equality and diversity policy during an assessment. Learners and
others involved in the assessment process should not be discriminated against
because of their cultural backgrounds, religion and everyone should be treated
equally. Assessor should also ensure that training and assessment are
accessible to everyone.
·
Data protection and confidentiality - According
to the legal requirements, assessment information and records have to be kept
confidential and secured at all times. Learners’ information should not be
shared with anyone and should only be accessed by those who have authorisation
and are involved in the assessment process.
Requirements from the awarding body:
·
Transparency – The assessment and its processes
must be transparent to everyone involved. The learner needs to know the purpose
of assessment, how the assessment will be carried out and also be given information
on the appeals process if required. Others involved should also be aware of
what's going on.
·
Record keeping – According to the awarding body,
assessment records have to be kept for at least three years and everything has
to be kept up to date and managed well. Records should be kept safe and made
accessible to only authorised persons.
·
Equal opportunity – All learners need to be
treated equally and they all need to be given an equal chance to complete their
assessment successfully. Assessor should not discriminate against any learner
based on learners’ culture, race, background, physical ability or ability to
speak English.
·
Compliance with assessment strategy - Assessor
should always comply with the assessment strategy put in place at the centre
8.2 Explain the contribution that technology can make to the assessment
process
Technology can make a huge
contribution to assessment if harnessed properly. The followings are some of
the areas where communication can be of huge benefits to assessment process.
Communication - Communication has
been made easy by technology; as an assessor, I do not always need to visit the
learner to have a face to face communication. Communication can be facilitated
by emails, mobile phones, Skype and Viber among others. Support can be provided
remotely so also, feedback.
E-portfolio - With technology it
is possible for you to access learners’ work anywhere at any time with the
development of the eportfolio. This system makes it easier to assess learners
no matter where they are, even in other countries. Once learners drop the work
on a shared drive or cloud, they can be accessed anytime and anywhere.
Online testing - this system has
reduced the stress of having to have exam papers printed, an invigilator to
monitor students and someone to sit down and mark papers. With online testing,
everything is done online with minimum supervision and minimum labour.
Recorded evidence – With audio
and video recorders in smartphones, it is easy for Assessors to capture
evidence and not miss out on anything during observations or discussion
sessions
8.3 Evaluate requirements for equality and diversity and, where
appropriate, bilingualism in relation to assessment
Equality and diversity is a legal
requirement that needs to be considered throughout the assessment process.
Learners and others should not be
discriminated against because of their cultural backgrounds, or religion and
everyone should be treated equally.
Support should be provided for
those whose first language is not English
Those with disability should be
provided with support and ensure that the assessment centre is easily
accessible to everyone.
8.4 Explain the value of reflective practice and continuing
professional development in the assessment process
Reflective practice is the
process of thinking back on what you have done and how you did it and learn
from that reflection if there is a better way of doing it so that it can be
improved upon.
Reflective practice helps the
assessor to learn from his own experience rather than from a formal teaching or
knowledge transfer.
Continuous professional
development (CPD) is a combination of approaches that will help an assessor
manage their own learning and development. It involves engaging in training or
other enrichment activities all aimed at improving on one's knowledge and
helping to stay abreast of developments and updates in the industry.
