Understanding the Principles and Practice of Assessment Question and Answer 5

5.1 Explain how to judge whether evidence is sufficient
Evidence is deemed as being sufficient when they meet all the required criteria for the learner to complete the course. When assessing evidence and matching them to criteria across all units, if all the required criteria are met, you can say that the evidence is sufficient. If even one criterion is not covered, the evidence is not sufficient and more assessment needs to be carried out to gather more evidence to cover the unmet criteria.

authentic
For authenticity, it is required that the learning appends his signature on all pieces of evidence and documents submitted.
For online assessment, the logs should show that the submission was made by the learners showing his assigned login details.

If a learner emails an evidence, printing a copy of that email, where the IV can clearly see that it is from the learner’s email address, can also authenticate the evidence.
current

It is current if it is within the date and not out of date.

5.2 Explain how to ensure that assessment decisions are made against specified criteria
Course standard specified criteria should be used at all times. Judgement or decision of whether an evidence is sufficient and valid should never be based on the assessor's opinion but the on the specified criteria

valid
Assessment decision is valid when it is relevant to the standards/criteria against which the candidate is being assessed. Assessment decision will be valid only if the assessment process and assessment methods used are valid and fit for purpose
reliable
Assessment decision is reliable when the same evidence is looked at by different Assessors and they all come to the same conclusion and make the same assessment decision.
fair
Assessment decision will be fair if the assessment process in itself provided equal opportunity to all learners to succeed, whilst considering their special needs
