The
writing of the gospels was necessitated by the events prevalent at the time of
the early Christian. Some of them are highlighted below;
1. Mortality of the Apostles and the
disciples: The Apostles and disciples were some of the eye witnesses
that witnessed the ministry of Jesus Christ and privy to some of the
fundamental events pivotal to our belief. As the gospel was spreading, the
apostles became target of persecution. James the son of Zebedee had been put to
death by Herod Agrippa (Acts 12.2), and only a miracle had prevented Peter from
being executed at the same time (Acts 12.3-l l). For these, it then became
urgent that all accounts of the ministry of Jesus need to be documented for
posterity and future purposes. They recorded it so that whether Christ would
return immediately or much later that the generations would still have access
to the Gospel.
2. Evangelistic Factor: This
was necessary as tool for evangelism for the early Christian to proclaim Christ
for those who were yet believers and for new convert as a reference point for
the deeds of Christ.
3. Heretical
Antidote: At some points, distorted versions were starting to appear and
there was need to record the truth while it could still be verified
Thank you
