Thought For The Day

I think the masses should always have the final say but that’s no longer the case anywhere in the world again and this is saddening. We have had more than 5 protests in the UK against government stringent austerity measures geared at saving the economy which have led to severe hardship; the same applies to the United State, Greece, Italy etc.
In the case of Nigeria, I will advise the government to allow the masses to prevail. We all know that subsidy is not good for the economy but the people still want it to be in place and I think that should settle it.
If the present administration thinks that it could no longer cope with subsidy; the easiest way out is to resign so as to protect your image. Berlusconi of Italy left when the people revolted against his austerity measure; since he knows quite well that if those measures are not taken, Italy economy will collapse. Funny enough, his successor has begun to implement those stringent measures.
Restore subsidy and let the pain of granting the subsidy provoke you to put in please an atmosphere that would naturally demystify the issue of subsidy. Get the refineries working, restore the power sector, diversify the economy; when you achieve these, removing subsidy will mean little or nothing to no one.
This is very difficult but that’s what the people want and that’s one of the underlining tenets of democracy.
(Culled from my letter to President Goodluck)
